Discovering Together: Intergenerational Learning at Miravida Living

The UW Oshkosh Computer Science Club, led by their professor, recently partnered with Carmel Residence at Miravida Living to host an afternoon of technical tutoring for residents. This intergenerational event was part of Miravida Living’s commitment to fostering community engagement and lifelong learning through its Thrive Program.

The Thrive Program is a holistic wellness initiative designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit of our members through diverse experiences. Centered around six key pillars—Awaken, Contribute, Discover, Explore, Connect, and Strengthen—the program encourages a fulfilling and vibrant lifestyle at every stage of life. This particular session focused on the Discover pillar, which is all about creating opportunities for learning and curiosity.

During the session, residents received guidance on digital organization, communication tools, social media, online security, and file and photo management. Encouraged to bring their own devices, residents participated in a hands-on, personalized learning environment that empowered them to navigate the digital world with greater confidence and independence.

Beyond practical skills, the event demonstrated the profound benefits of intergenerational collaboration. Studies have shown that:

  • For elders, engaging with younger generations in learning environments improves cognitive function, enhances social connections, and reduces feelings of isolation. Programs like this leave 85% of older adults feeling more connected to their communities.
  • For students, these experiences foster empathy, improve communication skills, and provide a deeper understanding of the aging process. In fact, 90% of young participants report gaining a more positive view of aging.

By bridging the digital divide, this collaboration enriched the lives of both residents and students, offering moments of joy, empowerment, and connection. It’s a beautiful example of how shared experiences can strengthen the bonds between generations, creating a community rooted in learning and mutual support.

We are grateful to the UW Oshkosh Computer Science Club for sharing their time and expertise. Events like these embody the heart of Miravida Living’s mission: to build a thriving, engaged community where growth and discovery happen together.
