The Miravida Living Chaplain serves is a community of people striving to embrace the life we have been given and to live it as richly and meaningfully as we are able. We understand our ministry is to provide homes and care for the elderly as they navigate the latter years of their lives on their own terms. Together with a staff of nearly 300 people and a network of volunteers, we seek to live out lives of appreciation and meaning as a community committed to the well-being of each other.

The Chaplain is looked to as a specialist in the care of the spiritual life of our people and community. The Chaplain is both leader and servant; as one who helps guide the direction of the community and as one who tends to the spiritual needs, pain, and suffering of the community members.  The Chaplaincy team, consisting of the full-time Chaplain and a Director of Spiritual services, works together to design and shape the methods and strategies used to address the assessed and expressed needs of residents and staff throughout the community.

The ideal candidate is a grounded spiritual leader who is willing and able to support the spiritual life and needs of the community. While personally grounded in one’s faith the chaplain needs to be able to relate to others with compassion, humility, and without bias. The Chaplain is a member of the interdisciplinary team and focuses on the spiritual needs of patients, families, caregivers, and staff, including volunteers. The Chaplain provides spiritual care and support as requested or determined by spiritual assessment or referral, appropriate to the specific setting and guided by values, beliefs and religious perspectives of the individuals receiving care or support.  The Chaplain is both leader and servant; as one who helps guide the direction of the Miravida Living community and as one who tends to the needs, pain and suffering of the community members.  The Chaplaincy team works together to design and shape the methods and strategies used to address the assessed and expressed needs of residents and staff. The Chaplain seeks excellence in spiritual care, which requires authentic demeanor, compassion, and skill in dealing with the spiritual dynamics of illness, loss, and death.

Essential Functions include the following.  Other duties may be assigned. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Provides confidential non-judgmental listening, counsel, guidance, direction, and support;crisis and disaster intervention; bereavement counseling; and guidance in ethical decision making.

  • Facilitates conflict resolution;educational opportunities; worship, sacramental, prayer and devotional opportunities.
  • Responds to imminent need as identified by resident, family, staff, or chaplain.
  • Is available to residents and families who request spiritual support. Will facilitate established connection when possible.
  • The chaplain will also be available to staff and their families for spiritual concerns related to work or personal matters.
  • The chaplain will act as a participating member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • The chaplain will act in an advisory capacity as a spiritual care resource to the facility administrator.
  • The chaplain shall be accountable to the supervisor and the facility administrator.

Supervisory Responsibility

Chaplaincy volunteers and other programs rely upon community leadership.  Serves as mentor for interns or others that may be assigned.  

Work Environment
This position serves the Miravida Living Community which includes independent housing, assisted living, memory care, and long-term care facilities.  Office space is provided. The chaplain is expected to travel to all parts of the Miravida Living campus as needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak clearly and hear what is said so that one can reflect with accuracy and comprehension. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The Chaplain must be able to transport self and to interact with others effectively.

Physical Activity Level

Sedentary physical activity performing non-strenuous daily activities. Movement from building to building and room to room is ordinary and routine.


Manual Dexterity

Manual dexterity sufficient to reach/handle items and work with the fingers.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours are negotiable. Responsibility for weekend worship is shared among chaplaincy team.  Some evenings and weekend work may be necessary on an as-needed basis.

Between the Miravida Living facilities in Oshkosh.

Required Education and Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Theological Studies.
  • Minimum of four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)
  • Endorsement by recognized religious community.
  • Demonstrated competency as inter-faith spiritual care provider.
  • Five years of experience in ministerial capacity.


Preferred Education and Experience

  • Board Certified Chaplain with a recognized certifying organization.
  • Demonstrated competence working with people living with chronic illness, dementia, and end of life concerns.
  • 3+ years’ experience in elder care 

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information. Ability to design and develop rituals for worship and to provide devotional leadership when called upon. The ability to learn and effectively chart as required as part of the interdisciplinary care team.

Computer Operations

Basic personal computer skills.

Miravida Living has been an accredited program of ACPE Inc. Since 1994. Clinical Pastoral Education in our center provides the student with the opportunity to pursue personal and professional growth as a spiritual care provider while also learning about our industry leading approach to spiritual care among elders living with the challenges of chronic illness and the impact of dementia. Living with Wonder is what Miravida means, and creating a community where this is how we approach our work, learning, and relationships is what the participant can expect to experience.

Currently, we are not accepting applications.

This is a part-time unit that will involve one day a week for group reflection and didactics and 10-15 hours per week of clinical work. This program is designed to work with those holding ministry positions or needing to complete a unit of CPE as part of their ministry process while also having other work responsibilities. It is also designed for those exploring chaplaincy as a vocational choice.

  • Applications are processed as received. As soon as the admissions interview is completed the applicant will be provided a reserved place in the program.

  • Group meets in person on Thursdays from 8:30 am-2:23 pm.

  • Participants will provide 15 clinical hours per week at one of the facilities of Miravida Living. These hours are flexible and can be designed to accommodate individual schedules.

  • Participants must be fully vaccinated for Covid and the flu.
